Healthcare Resources and HRT for the Transgender Community in Michigan

Hi Everyone,

You know that we want you to be healthy and safe.  To help you with your health care journey we are creating a list, by state of health care organizations that serve the transgender, nonbinary, gender queer and non-comforming community.  While we are creating this site for you, we are also doing this weekly post on health care.  While it’s nice to have a list, in these posts we can also give  you a few details on what each of the organizations we post actually do.  We’ll just go through the states alphabetically, unless you send us a note and request a particular state and we’ll move requests to the top of the list.

This week we are covering Michigan for Transgender, Non-Binary, and Gender Non-Conforming Care.

Many resources are, to their credit,  creating  comfortable places for routine and proactive health maintenaince as well as interventionary health care.  We will try to highlight what is offered in each case.

Michigan

Michigan Medicine (Website – Transgender Medical Services, FB – Michigan Medicine, IG – @umichmedicine)

Transgender Medical Sevices offers primary care including gynecology, dermatology and post-op surgerical and sexual care.  Speech and language therapy are available.

Payment Options: Michigan Medicine accepts the following insurance plans and has financial assistance available through MSupport, click the links for more information.   

Michigan medicine is located in Ann Arbor and Southeast Michigan.

No age limits are given, but the program appears to be for adults, check with the provider for age limits on services.

 

C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital (Website – Gender Services, FB – C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital IG – @mottchildren)

The Gender Services program offers puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy.

Payment Options:  The University of Michigan Health System accepts all kinds of insurance and there are many financial assistance programs available, click the links for more information.

The main campus is in Ann Arbor, but there are locations all over Michigan and Northern Ohio, see Locations.

The Gender Services program serves patients of all ages who are in transition along with their families. 

 

Henry Ford Health System (Website – Transgender Health  FB – Henry Ford Health System, IG – @henryfordhealthsystem)

Transgender Health has a wealth of services including hormone therapy, top surgery, removal of uterus and/or ovaries, facial feminization surgery, voice therapy, menstral suppression, fertility preservation, PrEP for HIV prevention, contraception, cosmetic dermatology and referrals for other specific surgeries.

Payment Options:  The Henry Ford Health System accepts many insurance plans and also has financial assistance programs, check the links for further information.

Transgender Health is in Detroit

No obvious age limits, but services appear intended for adults, check with the provider for age limits on services.    

 

Spectrum Center, University of Michigan (Website – Comprehensive Gender Services Program, FB – Spectrum Center IG – @umspectrumctr)

The Michigan Health System Comprehensive Gender Services Program is a multidisciplinary program providing comprehensive health care services for individuals who are gender-variant and in need of primary and gender-related care, including endrocrinology (it is not explicitly stated, but assuming this means hormone therapy), surgical services, and general health care.

Payment Options: are not obvious, check with provideer to see if there is coverage via U of M student health insurance.  Also the Gender Services Program is affiliated with Michigan Medicine so they may accept the following insurance plans and financial assistance may be availble through MSupport, check with the provider for additional details

The Comprehensive Gender Services Program is in Ann Arbor.

Age limits are not stated, but since this appears on the Student Life page of the University of Michigan website, it is assumed that services are for U of M students. 

 

Western Michigan University Health, Sindecuse Health Center (Website –Gender Affriming Care, FB –Sindecuse , IG – None Found)

Gender Affirming Care at Sindecuse offers hormone therapy.

Payment Options: Sindecuse accept insurance includingWMU student health insurance, click the link for more information.

Gender Affirming Care at Sindecuse is located on the campuse of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo and telehealth is also available.

Age limits are not obvious, check with the provider to learn age limits for services.      

 

Michigan State University, Student Health Services (Website – Services for Transgener Students, FB – Healthy Spartans , IG – @healthyspartans).

Services for Transgender Students offers hormone replacement therapy, for more comprehensive services the transgender student is referred to the University of Michigan Health System Comprehensive Gender Services Program

MSU Student Health Services/ Services for Transgender Students is in East Lansing on MSU Campus.

Services are for Michigan State University students, MSU Law students and their spouses.    

 

The Corner Health Center (Website – The Corner Health Center, FB – Corner Health , IG – @cornerhealth)

The Corner Health Center is a trans friendly health center that offers hormone therapy and puberty blockers (for patients under the age of 16).  The Corner Health Center also offers primary health care, HIV testing and STI’s testing and treatment.

Payment Options:  the Corner Health Center accepts insurance plans and has a sliding fee scale for the uninsured and economically needy and some  click on the link paying for care for more information.

The Corner Health Center is in Ypsilanti.

Corner health primarily serves patients between the ages of 12-25, puberty blockers are typically offered to patients ≤16.  Patients under 18 are accepted with consent of (a) guardians.  

 

Corktown Health Care Center (Website – Corktown Health Care Clinic, FB – Corktown Health , IG – @corktownhealth)

Corktown is an LGBTQ focused primary health care center.  Although not stated in the services, the scroll suggests that hormone replacement therapy is available.  Also available is primary health care and comprehensive HIV care and treatment including PrEP.

Payment Options:  Corktown Health Care Center accepts many insurance plans and has a sliding fee scale for the uninsured and economically challenged.  

Corktown is located in Detroit.

Ages served is not stated, but services appear to be for adults, contact the provider for age limits on services.    

 

Planned Parenthood of Michigan (PPofMI) has (15) Health Centers that are part of (1) organization, Planned Parenthood of Michigan (PPofMI), FB – PPofMI , IG – @ppofmi)

PPM provides routine gyneological screenings, prevention, testing and treatment of HIV/STI, birth control, condoms and many other services. but does indicate HRT as one of their services to the LGBTQ community although referrals are provided.

Payment Options:  Many PP Health Centers accept insurance and offer financial help, check on the websites and with the center for details .

The locations of the (15) PPM Health Centers are Ann Arbor East, Ann Arbor West, Detroit, Detroit Corktown Satellite, Ferndale, Flint, Grand Rapids, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Lavonia, Marquette, Petoskey, Traverse City and Warren.

The service is intended for adults 18+, but some PP Health Centers offer service to patients 16 to 17  andyou may be able to get HRT with parental consent and additional paperwork, check with the Health Center.

 

Transgender Michigan (Website – Transpages : Doctors, FB – Transgender Michigan, IG -None Found)

Transgender Michigan is an online website support for transgender people in michigan which also has a list of doctors that serve the transgender community and those that prescribe gender-confirming HRT.

Payment Options:  Check with individual providers for payment options.

VA Health Care for LGBTQ Veterans in Michigan has 5 organizations (Websites – VA Ann Arbor Health Care System, Battle Creek VAMC, John D. Dingell VA Medical Center, Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center and  Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center, FB – U.S. Dept. of Veteran Affairs, IG – @VeteranAffairs)

According to the U.S. Dept. of Veteran Affairs, Patient Care Services for LGBT veterans  includes the following (and other) services – hormone treatment, treatment and prevention of STIs/PrEP, cancer screening, prevention and treatment.  If there are questions reach out to the LGBT Veteran Care Coordinator (VCC) at the site.

Payment Options: VA Health Care is offered free of charge to veterans.   Veterans may have some copays.

VA Ann Arbor Health Care System has (1) medical center in Ann Arbor and (5) associated clinics in Flint, Ann Arbor (2) and Michigan Center, all in Michigan and (1) in Toledo, Ohio.

Battle Creek VA Medical Center has (1) medical center in Battle Creek and (4) associated clinics in Beton Harbor, Lansing, Muskegon, and Wyoming.

John D. Dingell VA Medical Center has (1) medical center, John D. Dingell, in Detroit and and (2) associated clinics in Pontiac and Yale.

Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center has (1) medical center, Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, in Iron Mountain and (7) associated clinics in Hancock, Ironwood, Manistique, Marquette, Menominee and Sault Saint Marie all in Michigan and (1) in Rhienlander, Wisconsin.

Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center has (1) medical center, Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center, in Saginaw and (10) associated clinics in Bad Axe, Cadilllac, Clare, Traverse City, Gaylord, Grayling, Alpena, Oscada, Saginaw and Mackinaw City.

LGBT Veteran Care is for U.S. veterans.
