Health Care Resources in Washington, District of Columbia

Hi Everyone,

You know that we want you to be healthy and safe.  To help you with your health care journey we are creating a list, by state, of health care organizations that serve the transgender, nonbinary, gender queer and non-conforming community.  While we are creating this site for you, we are also doing this weekly post on health care.  While it’s nice to have a list, in these posts we can also give  you a few details on what each of the organizations we post actually do.  We’ll just go through the states alphabetically, unless you send us a note and request a particular state and we’ll move requests to the top of the list.

This week we are covering District of Columbia which has an abundance of resources.  Many resources across the country are, to their credit, creating  comfortable places for transitional medicine as well as routine proactive health maintenance and interventionary health care.  We will try to highlight what is offered in each case.

Washington, District of Columbia

Transgender Care and Services offered by Whitman-Walker include hormone therapy, HIV/ STI treatment and counseling, specialty HIV treatment including PEP and PrEP, breast care and gynecology. STIs/PrEP.

Whitman-Walker has help finding affordable insurance and finding financial assistance for patients who don’t have insurance.

Several locations around Washington DC.

Age limitations are not obvious, services appear to be for adults, call the service provider for age limits on services.

Youth Pride Clinic offers specialized care for transgender youth in one location including hormone therapy, HIV/ STI testing and treatment including PEP and PrE.P.

Children’s National Hospital accepts a wide variety of govertment and commercial insurance plans as well as helping eligible patients recieve financial help.

Youth Pride Clinic is in Washington DC.

Services are available to children and youth until they turn 22.

The primary care provider’s at Mary’s Center are committed to supporting your health care journey which encompasses transition by prescribing and helping you maintain hormone therapy, referrals gender confirmation surgery, support for sexual health including HIV/ STI testing and treatment including PrEP.  Mary’s Center is a full service clinic that includes general health, dental care and many other services.

Mary’s Center accepts insurance and will for patients who don’t have insurance, Mary’s Center will help in finding affordable insurance and/or finding financial assistance.

Mary’s Center has several locations around Washington DC.

Mary’s Center accepts children to seniors, check with the provider for age limitation on services.

PPMWDC sites accept insurance and medicaid and will help you apply for medicaid.  Check the individual websites for further details.

Telehealth and (3) locations in Metropolitan DC with Caroll Whitehill Moses Center in Washington DC, Planned Parenthood Prince George’s County in Suitland MD and DC, (1) in Suitland and Gaithersburg Center in Gaithersburg, MD.

Age limitation for hormone therapy is 18 check with the clinics for age limitations on other services.

The Transgender/ Gender Affirmations Services offered by The George Washington University Hospital offers the following surgical procedures, facial feminization, breast augmentation,  and chest masculization.

The Center for Gender Affirmation at Westend Plastic Surgery offers the follwoing surgical procedures, masculine and feminine top surgery, facial feminization, vaginoplasty, metoidioplasty, correctional surgery, and body conturing.

Westend Plastic Surgery accepts conventional payements, insurance and has financing options.

Westend Plastic Surgery is located in DC.

About the author, Gayle M. Frankenbach, Ph.D. is the mother of a Daughter, Lise and a transgender son Elliott.  Elliott and Gayle both passionately desire to care about and care for the trans community.  Elliott and Gayle also both love the unbound creativity of the cosplay community.  When we realized there is a big overlap between the two communities B.UR.SLF, LLC was born at the interface of these two great communities to serve them individually and together.  Elliott and Gayle also enjoy running a trans son & parent business to be visible for parents on a journey to visibly support their own trans kids and be a great allies.
